Squero Nights: The Boatyards Stay Open
There are fewer than a dozen squeri left. Five of them open for five evenings, not as a display but as the end of a working day that visitors happen to be standing in.
The oars are the part that surprises people: each one shaped for a single rower, asymmetric, and unusable by anybody else. Two of the yards demonstrate the shaping.
One yard is finishing a hull that was started by the owner's father, and the paperwork for it goes back to 1979. It stands on the slip with the frames still open, which is the only week of the year that will be true.
A short boat crosses between the yards every twenty minutes from the Zattere. Walking between them takes about the same time and shows you more.
Yards are working buildings with wet floors and open water at one end. Closed shoes, and keep to the marked side of the slip.
